Urgent update

Can you get your work done in four days a week?

37signals have posted an update on their four day week experiment.

I’m still working my way through the copious comments to the post!

Labour-creating

Bobbie Johnson partly answers my question “How did that happen?” in relation to the internet.

He says:

It’s not for nothing that the net is characterised as a time sink, because wherever it carves out efficiencies, it usually manages to create extra work, too.

Good point.

Work less

37signals are running an interesting workplace experiment.

In particular the four day week:

We found that just about the same amount of work gets done in four days vs. five days.

Historically it was assumed that advances in technology would lead to everyone working less. It now seems the opposite has happened.

How did that happen?

I’ve long been an admirer of 37signals - their manifesto encapsulates my approach to the web.
